Pest Management Policy Adopted
On June 2, 2010, the Lower Saucon Township Council adopted a Pest Management Policy that will be utilized on all Township owned properties. The Pest Management Policy, which was created over a period of two (2) years by Township staff & consultants working with the Township Environmental Council (EAC) and Parks and Recreation Board, and is the first municipal pest management policy adopted in this region of the state, uses a variety of non-toxic alternatives in combination with commonsense practices to control or eliminate pest problems. The goal of the policy is to eliminate the use of certain chemical pesticides on all Township properties, either by Township employees or contractors, and to encourage residents to employ similar pesticide elimination methods.

It is the policy of Lower Saucon Township to focus on long-term pest prevention and give non-chemical methods first consideration when selecting treatment strategies. The full range of alternatives, including no action, will be considered first. If chemicals are needed to initially control a pest, first, the least toxic material will be chosen and second, non-pesticide techniques will be established to mitigate the pests, if the pests should reoccur. Read more about the policy HERE.

Se-Wy-Co Volunteer Fire Company Recognized For Achieving 100% Certification
At the December 2, 2009 Council meeting, State Fire Commissioner Ed Mann and the Township Council recognized the Se-Wy-Co Volunteer Fire Company for achieving 100% certification as a Participating Department in the State of Pennsylvania Voluntary Fire Service Certification Program. The certification signifies that 100% of the participating members of the Se-Wy-Co Volunteer Fire Company are certified at the Fire Fighter I level of training. Of the approximately 2,400 volunteer fire companies in the state, only 39 of them are certified at the 100% level. Se-Wy-Co is the first fire company in Lower Saucon Township and in Northampton County to reach this level of certification. Achieving the certification required a sustained level of sacrifice and dedication by the citizen volunteers of this fire company over a 7-year period and the Township is justifiably proud and deeply appreciative of their efforts. View the Council Resolution recognizing this achievement. Click HERE for Resolution.

Message from Police Chief Guy Lesser on Open Burning
The Township Police continue to receive complaints from residents due to smoke/odors from open burning traveling onto the property of others. They ask that residents adhere to the following regarding open burning:

OPEN BURNING
  • Please adhere to Township Code 112-5.
  • The burning of domestic refuse is prohibited.
  • Any burning/smoldering activity that causes odor and/or smoke to travel across property boundaries, which would be determined a nuisance by an ordinary individual, is also prohibited.
  • The penalty for violating the above is punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000.00 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding ninety (90) days.
Remember, most people do not want to smell the odors from a fire you create, nor do they want those odors drifting into their living rooms and bedrooms.

Home Improvement Contractor Registration
July 1 marks the date that the Attorney General's office begins the Home Improvement Contractor registration requirement. The definition of "Home Improvement Contractor" and more information about the Home Improvement Contractor Act can be found at http://www.attorneygeneral.gov. This act was put in place to protect the consumer and is not in the realm of authority of Lower Saucon Township. Residents and Contractors are encouraged to review the website prior to commencing their next home improvement project. The following was taken directly from the Attorney General's website.

While the law requires contractors to register with the attorney general's office, this registration is not an endorsement of their honesty or quality of work. For this reason, in addition to seeing whether a contractor is registered with the attorney general's office, you should also:
  • Check with the Better Business Bureau www.bbb.org.
  • Thoroughly check your contractor's references.
  • Obtain more than one bid for the job.
For more helpful information in selecting a contractor, go to the List of Registered Contractors section of our website.
